As summer ends, families return to school, work, appointments, and busier schedules. While the change may feel normal to us, our pets can suddenly find themselves spending more time alone.
Changes in routine can lead to boredom, extra energy, bathroom accidents, or anxious behavior. Here are five simple ways to make the transition easier.
1. Keep Their Routine Consistent
Try to maintain predictable times for meals, walks, bathroom breaks, play, and bedtime. If changes are necessary, introduce them gradually whenever possible.
2. Provide Exercise Before Leaving
A morning walk or active play session can help your pet release energy before the household becomes quiet. Choose activities appropriate for your pet’s age, health, and abilities.
3. Add a Midday Break
A drop-in visit or dog walk gives your pet exercise, companionship, fresh water, a bathroom break, and personalized attention while you are away.
This can be especially helpful for puppies, senior pets, active dogs, and pets adjusting to a new routine.
4. Offer Safe Mental Enrichment
Pet-safe puzzle toys, treat games, familiar music, and rotating favorite toys can help prevent boredom. Always choose activities that are safe for your pet when unsupervised.
5. Watch for Signs of Stress
Excessive barking, destructive behavior, pacing, bathroom accidents, escape attempts, or major changes in appetite may indicate that your pet is struggling. Contact your veterinarian or a qualified animal-behavior professional if you have concerns.
